Darren, Gemma & Jon headed out recently to get a feed of gurnard up north
They planted a block of berley on the bottom and spent the day filming for Darren's segment on the Black Magic Fishing NZ show
They got a good catch of gurnard and great footage of skate checking out the berley as well
It has been said that skate are good eating, but they are not as common as they used to be so he was left alone and only pictures were taken.
WETTIE SPEARFISHING COURSE
The boys have just returned from the SPEARFISHING COURSE. They headed up north on the first day but had to change location due to vis issues. Once in a different location they found good vis and plenty of fish. Phil got his first kingi and the other boys got a really good catch each including their own 'firsts/person best'

This will be a full on week of spearfishing with Darren Shields. Destination will be either Cape Kari Kari, Mercury Bay or Great Barrier - weather depending.
You will receive one on one tuition where Darren will work with you on techniques to make you a better spearfisherman. He will swim side by side with you helping you find & shoot fish, improving your skills. He will teach you what he has learned over 40 years, giving him 6 national titles plus many regional wins as well as representing New Zealand internationally at world and Inter Pacific events. Spearfishing HQ is a family business headed by Darren Shields who has been part of the spearfishing industry for more than 20 years.
Jackson, Darren's son at 15 shot and landed a NZ junior record stripe marlin of 126kgs and has won the (under 10 & under 16) Junior Spearfishing National Champs and holds several other junior fish records, he also helps out with the business when not at school. Griffin the youngest is following in their footsteps and can foot it with the best when it comes to stories. Mum, Alison is in charge of the office side of the operation and prefers to watch from the beach. Darren's dad Dave has been around the sport since the early 60's and regularly gets used for his knowledge.
Darren started selling spearfishing gear some 20 years ago from home before starting a Spearfishing retail store in 2001 that was built into a very successful business before being sold in 2005.
After three and a half years out of the spearfishing retail industry he has seen several areas of opportunity open up in the market. His experience and equipment knowledge is being offered again.
This business is going to be based around top service, knowledge of spearfishing that cannot be equalled by competitors, equipment selection and design will be influenced from many years in the water competing, filming and general hunter gathering.

Darren Shields 6 times NZ Spearfishing Champion, representative to 3 World Spearfishing events, also many South Pacific spearfishing competitions. Winner of many regional competitions numerous times within NZ.
Has dived from the tip of Stewart Island to the Chatham Islands, Fiordland and up to the Hokitika Trench 50 miles off Greymouth filming the giant pacific Bluefin tuna, north to the Three Kings and beyond to the Wanganella Banks.

Gemma Shields
Gemma, Darren's daughter has done her fair share of spearfishing and won the Junior Women's Spearfishing National champs. She also holds the NZ women's record for John Dory. She now is an integral part of Wettie Spearfishing and runs the business with dad day to day.
Brett Koekemoer
Brett moved here from South Africa 15 years ago and has been diving for 13 years. He has been diving all over NZ and has also done a trip to Vanuatu FAD & reef diving. He has shot Snapper up to 25lb and his personal best King fish was over 80lb. His main job here at Wettie Spearfishing is in the work shop - custom making spearguns and other spearfishing equipement.
Jackson Shields
Jackson, Darren's eldest son started at the young age of about 5 years old. He got his first kingfish on one of his first dives weighing in at 16kgs. He then went on to win several junior spearfishing events and also hold junior records for Striped Marlin, Golden Snapper, Flounder, Sweep, Skip Jack Tuna & Mahi mahi. Jackson helps out at Wettie Spearfishing when he is not at school.

If you are not entirely satisfied with your purchase please return in same condition as when purchased with all paper work and we will replace exchange or credit. Shipping charges are not refundable and the full amount of shipping costs by us will be taken from your refund.
No returns are accepted on goods returned in used condition unless already organized with us .
Cut lengths of rope, rubber, mono and the like are non refundable items as are books and dvds.
DISCLAIMER
Spearfishing, freediving and diving in general are dangerous sports, do not embark on any without proper tuition first.
Never load or fire a speargun out of the water and never point a speargun at anything but a fish.
Make sure you know all fisheries regulations for your area and never take more than enough for a feed, leave some for tomorrow.
